Located in the heart of authentic Alentejo, with its unique aromas, flavors, and textures, its nature, silence, and vastness, Herdade Monte da Cal spans 100 hectares of vineyards. The estate is situated in the municipality of Fronteira, in the parish of São Saturnino, approximately 40 km from Portalegre (Northern Alentejo).

The Herdade do Monte da Cal winery was inaugurated in 2007 and was designed to produce high-quality wines that are typically Alentejan. Surrounded by the peacefulness of the northern Alentejo plains, Monte da Cal is nestled in the calm natural environment characteristic of this region of the country, surrounded by an endless stretch of vineyards that seem to merge with the horizon.

The architecture and interior design of this new space are deeply influenced by Arabic styles, a tribute to one of the most influential cultures in Portuguese history, particularly in the south of the country. The result is a fresh and welcoming atmosphere.

BIODIVERSITY OF THE REGION
The variety of species that can be found in this area is due to the region’s unique characteristics. Low population density, extensive farming with minimal human intervention (such as vineyards, montados, or cereal steppes), sustainable agricultural practices, and the presence of rivers, streams, and reservoirs are key features of Alentejo.

The black stork and the alligator, for instance, are among the most beautiful and exotic birds that can be spotted in the Alentejo landscape. Other species that find their ideal habitat in Alentejo include hares, partridges, wild boars, griffon vultures, black vultures, and dozens of species of small birds.

Bees, which play a crucial role in pollination and in maintaining floral biodiversity, are also emblematic of the Alentejo region. Feeding on pollen from cistus, sargassum, rosemary, and sage, these bees are responsible for producing the famous Alentejo honey — a product with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
