Casal Garcia

The Casal Garcia was born during a year (1939) when the harvest was particularly good. On the way back from the Douro grape harvests, the French oenologist Eugène Hélisse decided to stop his journey to Porto after passing through the vineyards of Quinta da Aveleda in Penafiel. All dressed in white and wearing a straw hat to protect himself from the heat of the end of summer, he walked to the cellar of this property. He entered, introduced himself, and insisted on talking to one of the proprietors, Roberto Guedes. What he had seen a few minutes before from the window of the train had been really peculiar: the vines were impeccably tended and the parcels delimited according to the variety used, quite in the French style. This habit was not common in the protected area of "Verdes" wines. After a long conversation with Roberto Guedes, he decided to call on the services of the French oenologist who had promised him significant improvements in the winemaking method. The results were evident at the end of the harvest, when Eugène Hélisse removed a sample of a wooden barrel and put it in an old glass bottle. The wine had a beautiful transparent color and a freshness so obvious that it moved the people present. As a result, and to enhance the appearance of the wine, he passed a lace handkerchief around the bottle to dust it. And the lace remained there forever!

The name was obvious, since this wine came from one of the vineyards of Aveleda: that of Casal Garcia.

Present in more than 70 countries, Casal Garcia is today the world's best-selling green wine. Casal Garcia accompanies all the moments of good humor of several generations, and has become an ambassador of the Joy in the whole world.
