Description
The monk Emilion, who evangelised the commune that bears his name, retired near a spring that flowed at the foot of the cliffs bordering the Dordogne. A chapel dating from the early years of the Christian era stands on this site. It was around this chapel that the first vines in this famous commune were planted by the Romans, and since then the vineyards of Saint-Émilion have spread over the surrounding hills, producing the famous wine whose reputation is known the world over.
