Description
With origins dating back to 1638, Léoville was the largest vineyard in the Médoc region at the time of the French Revolution.
Léoville Poyferré springs from various divisions and successions in 1840. Its outstanding quality wines gained early recognition when it was ranked 2nd Growth in the 1855 classification. Château Léoville Poyferré was acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family.
The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyard of Léoville Poyferré into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravelly soil present in Saint Julien. This diversity contributes to the amplitude and complexity of the Léoville Poyferré wines.
Tasting
2003
The 2003 vintage exhibits a deep garnet color with attractive vermilion highlights.
Elegant and quite expressive, the nose is embellished by empyreumatic notes of leather and toast, intermingled with fragrances of spices, vanilla, and subtle notes of black fruit.
This full-bodied, generous wine has a silky texture with fine, velvety tannins. Notes of musk contribute complexity. Powerful and racy, the finish lingers on with a touch of freshness. There is plenty of enjoyment still to come.
2004
This deep garnet-colored 2004 reveals vermilion highlights.
Fragrant aromas of kirsch and sour cherry jam jump from the glass. There is considerable depth, accented by notes of cedar and toast. Extraordinarily complex, this wine continues to hold on to its youthfulness.
Generous and plump, it possesses fine-grained tannins. Notes of kirsch reappear on the mid-palate, evolving into more intense aromas of mocha and dark chocolate. The finish is persistent and warm. An exceptional wine to accompany your finest cuisine.
2005
Bright and limpid, the 2005 vintage presents a dark garnet color with vermilion highlights.
This superbly concentrated wine offers attractive aromas of jammy black fruit, along with empyreumatic and torrefied notes. Hints of cedar and eucalyptus add a touch of freshness.
Opulent and powerful, the tannins still have a bit of grip, yet the texture of the wine remains silky. Retro-olfaction reveals aromas of blackcurrant jam, white tobacco, and a hint of oak. This remarkable vintage is endowed with an extraordinary aromatic persistence and a fresh finish.
