Description
The Mont-Redon vineyard, whose first vines date back to Roman times, is sheltered from the Mistral wind at the foot of a hill called ‘Montem Rotundum’ by the Romans, hence the current name Mont-Redon. Owned by the Domaine Pontifical in the 14th century, the vineyard then passed into the hands of the Astier-Mathieu family, who ran it until the end of the 19th century. In 1923, Henri Plantin bought the estate, which then comprised just 2.5 hectares of vines, and began the first major plantings. A trailblazer, Plantin recognised the exceptional potential of the plateau's sandy, chalky and pebbly soils, which became the estate's identity. Under the management of subsequent generations, the vineyard grew to 100 hectares, becoming the largest estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. In the 1950s, the family began exporting its wines, with the United States as its first market.
