Description
Bruichladdich is a distillery on the Scottish island of Islay known internationally for its whiskies distilled under the Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore labels.
The distillery was founded in 1881 by the Harvey brothers in the westernmost part of the island. Following family disputes, William Harvey took over the reins of the business until a fire in 1934 and his death in 1936. Over the following decades, the distillery changed owners several times before closing its doors in 1994. In 2000, a group of investors led by Mark Reynier of Murray McDavid bought Bruichladdich. The distillery was completely dismantled and then reassembled, retaining its Victorian, gravity-fed equipment and no computer-controlled processes. In 2012, the company was acquired by Rémy Cointreau.
The Octomore Series is a collection of batch limited editions, marketed as having the highest peat levels of any Single Malt. Octomore Farm is a hillside property on peat soil above Port Charlotte that grew barley and produced whisky in the 1800s.
Octomore 10.2 is an 8-year-old peated whisky. It spent the first four years of its life in fresh bourbon casks, before being moved to Sauternes casks of exceptional quality.
Tasting
Building on the brilliant structure of Octomore, this 10.2 edition spent the first four years of its life in fresh bourbon casks, before being transferred to Sauternes casks of exceptional and incredibly rare quality. The renowned chateau that originally managed these casks filled them three times with sweet French wine, allowing the oak to soften and thus temper its influence on the ensuing brandy. The combination of softer smoke and oak influence created a sublime balance with notes of tropical fruit.
