Description

The Glendronach distillery, founded in 1826, has a rich and eventful history. It was owned by a son of William Grant (Glenfiddich) between 1920 and 1960, then by Wm Teacher & Sons, a large family whisky company, before being sold to Allied Distillers in 1976. Closed in 1996 by Allied Domecq, it resumed production in 2004 under the Pernod Ricard group until its acquisition in 2008 by Billy Walker and the Benriach consortium for around £15 million.

Despite these changes, Glendronach has retained its traditional production methods: local barley, wooden washhouses, partially wood-fired stills, and warehouses with dirt floors.

Tasting

Eye: Bright autumn gold.

Nose: A wonderful aroma of ripe currants dusted with cinnamon sugar combines with a contrasting touch of crisp citrus. The fine peat influence gives a smoky charred wood character, filled with freshly ground barley and traces of vanilla toffee sweets.

Palate: Bright oak spices and floral heather honey evolve into rosehip and barley sugar, all warmed by a hint of white pepper. Subtle notes of peat complete the palate, giving a subtle depth and dryness to the glowing embers of the campfire.

Finish: a unique marriage of crisp fruit and barley-laden Highland characteristics.
Highland loaded with barley surrounded by gentle peat smoke. A fascinating reminder of the heather that burns in distant valleys.
